McDonalds Radio Ad: Chicken McBites Less Risky than Petting a Pit Bull

by John D. Harvey on February 4, 2012

For those who haven’t heard, McDonalds launched a new radio advertisement where they state that eating its Chicken McBites is less risky than petting a pit bull. They are obviously trying (in vain) to combat the negative publicity generated by the awareness that their chicken product is something called “mechanically-separated poultry.” Here’s the advertisement:

This Huffington Post story explains mechanically-separated poultry in stomach-turning detail.

Mechanically-Separated Chicken

Depending on the ratio of ethics to idiocy in the marketing department at McDonalds Fast Food, they either didn’t calculate the blowback they’d get from this ad strategy, or they absolutely knew their ad would stir up the pit bull / animal welfare community. You’ve heard the old saying … there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

So, if you haven’t noticed the pictures that accompany this blog, I’ve worked / volunteered in pit bull rescue. All of the dogs pictured on my site are far less dangerous than ammonia-washed, mechanically-separated poultry.

But if you want to see a really creative and cool response to McDonalds’ wildly ignorant ad, then check out Bad Rap Pit Bull Rescue’s Facebook page. They’ve launched a photo protest that riffs on the recent Occupy / We Are The 99% photo series. Really brilliant stuff! They have MANY shots like this.

And in closing … I give you Mickey.
